The Effects of a Civil War

Approximately 7 billion people live in the world. The culture and life style of a country where diverse people live are different from each other. Therefore, every country has a different opinion on any event. Although there is often divergence of opinion between different countries, this sometimes happens among people living in the same country. Debates and conflicts occur and they increase over time. As a result of this, a war environment come into being in the country. On this wise, the war occurring among people who live in the same country is named a civil war. There are three important effects of this kind of war: the regime change, the decline of the country, and psychological effect.

The first important effect of civil war is the regime change. The civil war usually begins with a riot uprising against the existing regime. While one group is opposed to the government or the current regime, the other group supports the regime. As a result of this, an armed conflict occurs between these two groups. For example, in 1936 a civil war broke out between republicans and nationalists in Spain. This war resulted in the victory of the nationalist group. Sometimes a religious uprising causes a regime change. For example, in Lebanon a civil war started and lasted for 15 years. There were many different religious groups in this war. As a consequence of this war, today Northern Lebanon is dominated by Syria, while its southern part is under Israeli occupation for a long time. Namely, such civil wars result in a regime change.

The second important effect of civil war is the economic and educational decline of a country. The country in the civil war incurs huge financial losses. Because a country spend a lot of money to buy weapons during the civil war, its economy gets weaker. Also, these weapons harm the living area of the country, and thus many buildings collapse or become damaged. After the war is over, a large amount of money is required to repair them. In addition, the education system of a country in a civil war drops behind. It is difficult for a country to provide education for its citizens in a war environment, so its people fall behind the times, and an ignorant society grows. Briefly, civil wars cause the country to become weaker in terms of economy and education.

The last important effect of civil war is psychological. Clearly, most people in the middle of this war want to get away from the war environment. They have to leave their own country even if they do not want it. They deal with material and spiritual difficulties. They lose their own culture and life style. Children are the most affected group by these wars. They lose their mothers, fathers, or any other relative during the war. These all deeply affect their lives. In other words, such losses leave deep traces in their lives. For these reasons, the psychological effect is the most important result of a civil war.

To sum up, there are three serious effects of a civil war. This war causes countries to change its regime. Also, countries with civil wars drop behind. As a final result, it exposes its citizens to a lot of psychological problems. When one considers such bad consequences of a civil war, is it worth fighting?
