Today’s Madness: Plastic Surgeries

It is seen that plastic surgery is in its golden age. When the majority of people would like to change something about their bodies, plastic surgery is the first way they prefer. Looking good and wishing to look like a famous person are the most common aims of the reconstructive surgeries. Some people acknowledge that plastic surgery is vital for cosmetic purposes such as eating, sleeping, and drinking water. However, I strongly disagree with this opinion for three reasons: social media’s influence, the risk of infection, and the cost of surgeries.

The first reason why I am not in favor of this view is that social media networks push plenty of users to look well. First of all, they listen users’ daily conversations to propose advertisements what appeal to their users. As an illustration, the users even mention about cosmetic once, the target sales promotions have already been chosen and those stuck out like a sore thumb. Whenever the users log in, the adverts suddenly appear on the page. As time goes by, they are exposed to these commercials over and over again; consequently, they realize that they have dislikes about their bodies. On the one hand, the users’ self-acceptance was decreased. On the other hand, their mental health was being destroyed in time. According to Gul Dilek Turk and Serkan  Bayrakci’s findings, 69% of women who are social media users would rather have an operation to change their physical appearances. Furthermore, those women suppose that they cannot be happy unless they do it. In short, the online community is enforced to be well-groomed.

For another thing, there is a possibility of getting infection after the surgery. Even though there are many medical advances, surgeries contain various risks, notably the infection. To cite an example, Selen Tashan, aged 31, caught an infection because of her plastic surgery. “The surgery was in the most popular clinic among celebrities. I did not want to go to a state hospital, so I came there. After the operation, everything was good. I was coming back my home, yet there was a big problem. My face became swollen and I felt a terrible pain.”, she said. Eventually, she went to the public hospital and took a medicine. She was the luckiest one, though. Unfortunately, Sevinc Celik was not in luck. After her rhinoplasty, a germ was found in her blood. Thanks to the germ, her post-surgical pains we’re getting worse. In the end, her legs were amputated. To conclude, the risk of infection is a serious health problem.

The final reason why I am against this idea is that plastic surgeries cost thousands of Turkish liras. If you don’t want to be disappointed due to the result of surgery, you should go to the experts, in other words, doctors. Moreover, the popularity of a doctor, the equipment used for surgery, and medicine that will be used after the operation are the most fundamental causes of the expense. Besides, average price for each reconstructive surgeries cost roughly $2500. The cost certainly depends on the type of cosmetic operation a person will undergo.

In brief, I do not think cosmetic surgeries are crucial as many people assume in view of the social media’s bad effect, the risk of catching infection, and the expensiveness of surgery. As far as I am concerned, our physical appearances designate our lives temporary; nonetheless, the most important thing is that our attitudes embody our social relations. In my opinion, that is the best way to gain insight.
