Types of Parents

The concept of family has derived from a mother, a father and a child or more children since the first family was formed on the Earth, but parents have varied in many ways in different cultures or countries. Would it be more exciting to live with scrict parents than indulgent ones? Unfortunately, it is beyond a person’s control to choose the type of his parents. Generally, parents can be divided into three groups according to how they treat their children: authoritarian, authoritative and permissive parents.

First of all, authoritarian parents have high expectations of their children and they possess extremely strict rules. Authoritarian parents are called “drill sergeants” because they always command the lives of their children. For instance, these parents tell the child how they should handle responsibility and they tell the child how they should feel. Authoritarian parenting is similar to monarchic administration. Namely, parents establish to follow rules for children and when the children do not obey the rule, it ends up with punishment. One of the most important features is that they never explain why the children have to follow rules.

Secondly, authoritative parents are more polite and lovely than authoritarian parents. Authoritative parents are called “helicopter” because these parents hover over their children and rescue them from the hostile world. That is, they protect their children from any possible negative feelings. These parents allow their children to make choices. They make excuses for the child, but they complain about mishandled responsibilities. According to the Cornell University, children who have authoritative parents are independent and have a high sense of responsibility.

Finally, permissive parents are the most indulgent of all. These parents are called “consultant” because they provide guidance and consultant services for their children. They demonstrate how a child should care of himself and how he can take responsibilities. They allow the child to experience life’s natural consequences.

To sum up, there are mainly three types of parents which are authoritarian, authoritative and permissive parents. Because all of them differ from each other, it is normal that they use distinctive methods while growing their children. I believe that parents may assume diverse roles against their children, but what is important is that they should know to use the right treatment style at the right time.
