Who is a Better Parent?

Raising a child is definitely a very challenging task for parents. However, raising a child is one of the most desired things by parents in the world. It is too difficult since constant attention is required as they are growing up. This imposes some hard roles and duties on parents, and parents have to adjust them in order to bring up their children well. Their adaptation determines how good parents they are. The most important question is who adjusts these roles better. Men or women? According to the research done by METU, 63% of Turkish community think that women are more likely to adjust their roles than men. I agree with them and strongly assert that women are better parents than men for three reasons: sensational relationship between mothers and their children, genetic quality, and social norms.

The first reason is that mothers have a closer emotional relationship with their children than fathers. In the first place, mothers spend more time with their children, and it strengthens the link between mothers and their children. To illustrate, the legendary painter Salvador Dali said to us that he spent so much time with his mother that he did not remember the time that he spent with his father. Secondly, mothers are more soft-hearted people than fathers, so they bring their children up kindly. According to  the research conducted by the teenage psychology department of Imperial College London,  the more soft-hearted people are, the more polite and successful their children are in their lives. To conclude, I believe that there is a much friendlier bond between children and their mothers.

The second reason is that mothers have a better quality in taking care of their children genetically. For one thing, mothers have genes that cause them to produce hormones that contribute to reveal emotions. This helps mothers be a better parent. For instance, oxytocin, which is secreted from the pituitary gland under the influence of genes, provides mothers with maternal instinct. Secondly, mothers differ from fathers in that they have two X chromosomes, and double X chromosomes have a significant impact on being a parent. For example, they keep you away from being a selfish parent, and this is an essential condition to be a decent parent. In conclusion, I agree that a genetic feature is one of the remarkable reasons why women are better parents than men.

The third reason that determines parenting is social norms. First of all, mothers bring their daughters up as a mother from birth. For example, little girls are taught a wealth of information on rearing a child, such as preparing special food, tailoring clothes for newborns and children, caring for the ill and so on. In addition, mothers purchase doll houses as toys for their children. The feeling of motherhood is coded into the subconscious of girls in such ways. Secondly, most societies all around the world assign mothers the role of taking care of kids. Even Turkish community believes this notion so strongly that it is reflected in their sayings like “Yuvayı dişi kuş yapar”. In short, I think that social norms play a crucial role in the position of mothers in family life.

All things considered, I think it is crystal clear that women are better parents than men for several reasons. The sensational bond between children and their mothers as well as hereditary factors and societal conventions all have a massive impact on becoming a good parent. I fervently believe that women will continue to be better parents than men as long as mankind exists.
